The first maker of the famous Lochgelly Tawse was Robert Philp, who produced the first one for his daughter to use when she entered teaching as a profession. From thence, the tradition was continued by another maker called George Dick, and more famously by his son John J Dick. On a bench, or bent over- it is not unwieldy when swung. I would chose a caning over a tawsing any day.
